Boundary Stones.
Old Stones.
The Burgesses controlled an area enclosed by Hill Lane,
Burgess Street (now Road) and the land west of the Itchen. Several old boundary
stones survive for example, the Rosemary Stone opposite No 47 Burgess Road.
Another, called the Hode Stone, is at the top of Hill Lane. There was a stone
at the top of Langhorn Road, the Langhorn Gate, I think is now by the Itchen in
the University boatyard grounds.
New Stones.
1) Redbridge Bridge – on the old bridge.
2) Fernyhurst Lake – a lake between Bakers Drove and Cromarty Road. Stone put next
to the lake on south side of footpath, running between the two roads.
3) Lord’s Wood – top of Coxford Road. On bank and ditch boundary opposite
pumping station.
4) Sports Centre – adjoining public footpath that runs northwards from Golf
Course Road to Hadrian’s Way. This one is missing or was never put in place.
5) Bassett – at north end of Avenue, accessed via Chilworth Road, nearby layby.
6) Itchen Valley. Beside the River Itchen at Mansbridge Road picnic site just
up path from White Swan pub.
7) Townhill Park/Cutbush Lane. In the grounds of Townhill Park House. Best
viewed during any of several open days each year.
8) Netley Common. I think this one has
been found but not sure of exact location.
9) Tickleford Gully/Westwood – somewhere on footpath next to the stream, on SCC
land.
10) Weston Shore. From car park at
southern end of Weston Parade take shore path southeast until it crosses the
stream. The stone is on the right about three metres further on.

11) Court Leet Mound. This is Cutthorn mound, in woodland
at the north end of the Common, east of the Avenue. The Cutthorn has long been
associated with the Court Leet, and is probably of Saxon origin. (The site of
the stone is perhaps SW of the mound.)
12) Crosshouse Hard. (Presumably the one near Cross House.)
